Last week was one of my personal favorite days of the year – Earth Day! Combine that with National Volunteer Week, and we knew we wanted to get out in our community and take part in a day of volunteering. With the help of Hands on Atlanta, we were able to connect with Truly Living Well, a Natural Urban Agriculture Center committed to using food production as a way to provide a welcoming green space for people and educate them on how to grow their own food. They also offer weekly box subscriptions for members to enjoy produce grown right where they live.
With the help of our fellow amazing volunteers and the experienced lead, we were able to completely flip 6(!) plant beds from the previous season’s crop to tomatoes. We first gathered bamboo before digging holes in the beds to place the bamboo in; these will later be used to hold the tomatoes up in the vertical planting method that the farm follows. While we were doing this, other volunteers were clearing out the previous season’s plants in the beds before we all later planted the tomatoes.
We had so much fun getting out in our community and learning more about an organization that provides a green space for the locals while “demonstrating the viability of producing high quality, naturally grown fruits and vegetables in the urban environment.”
Check out Hands on Atlanta and explore dozens of volunteering opportunities near you. We might just see you there!
